Interview: Icon For Hire

Share

We caught up with Ariel and Shawn (aka Icon For Hire) ahead of their debut gig in Scotland at King Tut's on 24th April...

KT’s: Hey guys, thanks for taking time out to chat to us ahead of your first visit to Scotland!

IFH: Thanks for having us, we’re so happy to get to talk with you.

KT’s: From writing books to going on a huge worldwide tour, you guys seems to keep pretty busy! Ariel, tell us a bit more about your book ‘Turn Your Pain Into Art’ and how you got the inspiration to name the tour after this?

IFH: I (Ariel) have put in a lot of work in trying to figure out how to be happier and find joy in my daily life, and for years I’ve been sharing various self-help methods and techniques and then reporting my findings back to my followers via my weekly YouTube series, the REL Show. I also taught a class called Turn Your Pain Into Art on Vans Warped Tour, and that became the starting point for the book. Turning your pain into art is about connecting with your creativity and taking all the hurt built up inside and transforming it into something meaningful.

It made sense to name the tour after the book, since we wanted to incorporate those overall themes into the tour, like battling sadness, finding joy, and sharing your story. We asked fans to submit some of their “art” and used that in our stage backdrop, and many of our talented fans share their fan art with us during our meet and greets as well. We have such a brilliant fanbase, and we are grateful they catapulted this book to be a #1 bestseller!

KT’s: Talking of the worldwide tour, how have things been going so far?

IFH: We just finished up a 36 city US tour and that was our best tour yet-but we're hoping the European tour can top it!  The fans bring such amazing energy to every show in every city, and we love hearing people’s stories and learning more about them. Connecting with them is all the motivation we need to put on a great show.

KT’s: Is there anything that you can’t go on tour without?

IFH:  Hand sanitizer! I am a huge germaphobe so I always have some with me!

KT’s: Describe your sound in three words…

IFH: Energetic, edgy, fierce.

KT’s: Any final words before you take to the legendary Tut’s stage?

IFH: We’re so excited to see everyone and hope that you’ll come out and laugh and cry and rock out with us... and we appreciate every single one of our fans. Come say hi!
