Q&A: Little Comets

Tell us how Little Comets first formed as a band…
I'd love to have some made-up story so..... me and Mickey decided to form a band as the antithesis to the Gallagher brothers who we felt gave siblings in groups a bad name. We wanted to show that they could co-exist in a creative environment. Matt looked a bit like us so we added him to the experiment. Unfortunately 10 years down the line, we all hate each other, so looks like Liam and Noel were actually ahead of their time.. Who knew?!
Where did the name come from?
We used to play football with these older kids and one day eventually we managed to beat them – we thought they were calling us Little Comets, but they were quite angry and it turns out actually it was something else. The name stuck since then.
You’re known for crashing university lectures and playing your music, do you still do this?
Ah no, that was great fun but we had to stop when Mickey nearly got impaled by a lecturer in Hull.
What music did you listen to growing up?
Lots and lots of different things – anything in our parents’ vinyl collections, radio, cassettes, big snare drums, loads of stuff.
What was the inspiration behind your most recent track ‘American Tuna’?
Well, that is a sad one really – but it was the story of our keyboard player Matt Saxon and his relationship over the atlantic with his partner... it imagines a more solid future for them. I suppose it is a slightly ligth heart glimpse into the amount of time you have to dream in a long-distance relationship.
If you could have dinner with anyone in music past or present who would it be, and why?
My family – just having a nice talk about our day and (hopefully) avoiding most of the food ending up on the floor.
Is there anything that you can’t go on tour without?
Matt, Mickey, Nathan, other Matt, sound engineer, equipment: everything else is expendable.
Any exciting plans for the rest of 2019?
Hopefully finish the album – I broke my finger in May which set us back a couple of months and then a close friend of mine died which has really cut us all up quite a bit. I didn’t really have any motivation to make music over the summer which was sad... then my third child was born so I’ve been quite busy since July... hopefully after the tour things can settle down and we can get back to making music.
