Q&A: Joesef

By Susan Kerr

Q&A: Joesef

Joesef; an exciting new artist who is making serious waves from the confines of his bedroom in the east end of Glasgow! He sold out his King Tut’s debut gig and has already sold out his first gig at Summer Nights with Coors Light. Due to phenomenal demand, we added a second date and Joesef will be closing the festival!

Check out the Q+A we did with Joesef and listen to a preview of his newest single ‘Loverboy...

We are LOVING your tracks! How does it feel to have your music picked up by the likes of Annie Mac?!

It’s pretty weird. Me and my mates having been going to her festival since it first started a few years ago and now she’s saying my name on the radio and playing my tunes, it’s funny!

You’ve recently sold out gigs across Scotland! Where to next?

I’m doing a gig in London at the Omeara in September which should be cool, I have some other things planned for later in the year also.

What comes first for you, producing the melody or writing the lyrics?

I usually just whack the tune out on the guitar- if I find some chords I like and I have something to write about, then I’ll build the track from there.  I’m usually more productive if I’m hungover or feeling sh**e, which is a lot of the time, so it’s good to have that outlet I guess.

How would you describe the music you’re making?

I’m not really sure myself to be honest. A lot of my influences come from quite old music, probably a bit old school in terms of production but with more modern themes. F**k knows to be honest, nobody has been able to pigeonhole it- not even me!

Tell us about your first ever gig?

It was a bit wild, I was in the dressing room after sound check and stayed there the whole time before going on stage. I didn’t get to see or hear the crowd until we were on the stairs next to the stage, I was sh**ing myself but as soon as I went on I was fine, I felt like I got hit by a train though- it really was mental.

What music did you listen to growing up?

I would just listen to everything my mum would play growing up and it’s kind of stuck with me,

Al Green, The Cure and a lot of old music. I feel like I’ve been listening to the same tunes since I was a baby.

Was being a singer always the dream for you?

No not really. I’ve always kind of sang but never took it seriously, I’ve always loved music and I tried university and college but I dropped out. I thought I’d just be a bartender forever to be honest.

If you could have dinner with anyone in music past or present who would it be, and why?

Probably Chet Baker, he was a jazz musician, he played trumpet and sang he’s one of the big boys for me. He’d had such an interesting life but he always seemed a bit lost, and he’s the handsomest man I’ve ever seen, I’d have a pint with him.

Is there anything that you can’t go on tour without?

Booze and the band.

What can we expect from your forthcoming EP?

It’s basically about my first love and what went down before during and after it ended.  I was a bit of a mess writing it but it’s cool having these tunes as a result, something good out of something bad I suppose.

Joesef headlines two nights of our Summer Nights with Coors Light festival. The first date is SOLD OUT but there are still tickets for second show which will close the festival.
